This year, SCR-132 was introduced to officially recognize July 25th as Hire a Veteran Day in California. The day serves as a call to action for employers to acknowledge and utilize the unique skills and experiences veterans bring to the workforce.

Annually, approximately 200,000 service members transition from military to civilian life, often facing significant challenges in finding and competing for jobs. In California, home to nearly 2 million veterans, higher unemployment rates among veterans are observed along with a substantial portion of the nation’s homeless veteran population.

Veterans possess core values such as loyalty, integrity, and a strong work ethic. Many are technical experts with leadership and team experience, making them invaluable assets to any workplace. In 2021, nearly 38% of California’s veterans held a bachelor’s degree or higher, contributing significantly to professional and trade sectors.

In addition to SCR-132, SB 73 has been authored to allow private businesses to establish voluntary hiring preferences for veteran applicants. This bill has passed through the State Senate with bipartisan support and is now in the Assembly.

The initiative aims at honoring those who have served by creating more opportunities for them in the workforce. The hope is that together more meaningful impacts can be made in the lives of veterans.

The statement concludes by expressing honor in serving one of California's largest veteran populations within the 32nd District.
