Senator Kelly Seyarto has announced the successful passage of SCR 25, a resolution that designates a portion of Interstate 15 as the Deputy Darnell Andrew Calhoun Memorial Highway. The section of the highway runs from Central Avenue to North Main Street in Lake Elsinore and Riverside County.

Deputy Darnell Andrew Calhoun was killed while responding to a domestic violence call on January 13, 2023. He began his law enforcement career with the San Diego Police Department in 2019 before joining the Riverside County Sheriff's Office in 2022, where he was stationed at the Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station.

Calhoun was born in Pomona and raised in Murrieta, where his family operates a restaurant. During his youth, he worked at this family establishment and later attended California State University, San Marcos. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in Criminology and Justice Studies. In 2017, he married his high school sweetheart and they lived within California's 32nd District.

Senator Seyarto expressed personal admiration for Deputy Calhoun: “I was fortunate enough to know Deputy Calhoun personally through his work in our community,” said Senator Seyarto. “He was the epitome of a public servant and I am honored and humbled to be able to recognize him in this way, so we never forget the sacrifice he made to keep our district safe.”

Deputy Calhoun is survived by his wife Vanessa, their three sons, as well as his parents and siblings. He held a beloved place within the communities where he lived and served.
