Senator Kelly Seyarto's legislation aimed at supporting the education of military families has been signed into law in Sacramento, California. Senate Bill 920 solidifies the Purple Star School Program as state law, a program currently managed by the California Department of Education.

The Purple Star Schools initiative offers specialized support to military families, including dedicated staff, transition programs, military-related resources, staff training, and social-emotional support. These services assist military children who often face frequent relocations and deployments. On average, these children relocate six to nine times from kindergarten through 12th grade.

"Purple Star schools are a lifeline for military families, offering the stability and support their children need to succeed," stated Senator Seyarto. He emphasized that "military children face unique challenges, from frequent relocations to disrupted support systems." The formalization and expansion of this program aim to provide necessary care while acknowledging the sacrifices made by these families in service to the country.

The legislation is an extension of ACR 53, which initiated the program in 2021. To earn a Purple Star School designation, schools must meet standards set by the Military Child Education Coalition. Over 90 schools in California have achieved this recognition.

Senate Bill 920 received bipartisan backing and encountered no opposition during its passage through the legislature.
