Legislation supporting the education of military families has been signed into law. Senate Bill 920, which ensures the continuation of the Purple Star School Program, is now formally established as state law in California.
The program, overseen by the California Department of Education, provides military families with specialized support. This includes dedicated staff, transition programs, military-related resources, staff training, and social-emotional support to assist military children in managing frequent relocations and deployments. It is noted that military children typically relocate six to nine times between kindergarten and 12th grade.
The schools serve as a vital resource for military families by offering stability and necessary support for their children's success. The formalization and expansion of this program aim to provide access to specialized care while recognizing the sacrifices made by these families in service to the country.
This legislation builds on ACR 53, which initiated the program in 2021. Purple Star Schools achieve their designation by meeting standards set by the Military Child Education Coalition. Over 90 schools across California have earned this designation.
Senate Bill 920 received bipartisan backing and encountered no opposition during its passage through the legislature.
