Senator Kelly Seyarto of Murrieta announced the signing into law of his legislation aimed at improving access to California's state budget. Senate Bill 978 mandates that the Department of Finance must offer the state budget in a machine-readable format on its website.

The bill targets issues identified in the Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal), which has faced criticism from the State Auditor for not meeting expectations. By increasing accessibility, this law seeks to give Californians better insight into how their tax dollars are utilized.

"California’s several hundred billion dollar budget is notoriously complex, even for experts. Our taxpayers deserve clarity," stated Senator Seyarto. "I’m proud to champion a solution that not only promotes transparency but also preserves the budget's historical significance for future generations."

SB 978 was passed by the legislature with bipartisan support and encountered no opposition.
