A person commits suicide every 11 minutes in the United States. Suicide ranks among the top four leading causes of death for individuals aged 10-44, with its occurrence nearly twice as common as homicide.

The issue is also significant among Veterans, with an average of 17 Veterans committing suicide daily.

"I am proud to have authored SCR 114 to declare September 8-14, 2024 as California Suicide Prevention Week in an effort to raise awareness on this public health issue."

Every time a person commits suicide, their potential contribution to the community is lost. Over 5 million people in the United States have been affected by losing a loved one to suicide.

"We must do everything in our power to support and uplift those experiencing mental health hardships and help them access the help they need."

The Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline is available nationwide. Calling or texting 988 connects individuals directly with a trained, compassionate counselor who will listen, provide support, and connect them to appropriate resources. This service is free, confidential, and available 24/7.

For additional resources and information on how to support a loved one going through a mental health crisis, please visit the National Institute of Mental Health.
