City of Perris issued the following announcement on Nov. 17.
The Getting Everyone to Actively Ride (GEAR) project under CDBG funding is currently under construction and is looking toward a December 2020 completion, Perris officials announced on November 13, 2020.
The bike lane consists of the development and installation of Class III (Bike Route) bikeway facilities. The bike lane begins at the cross street of San Jacinto and Perris BLVD and covers approximately 6.6 miles of Class III bikeway throughout the City.
In addition to the bike lanes, the project includes three bike repair stations, three hand sanitizer stations and nine bike racks on selected areas, providing safer routes for residents biking around town. Class III Bike Lanes will allow access to downtown Perris, City Hall, Perris Elementary School, Perris Lake High School, Rotary Park, Pinacate Middle School, California Military Institute and Innovative Horizons Charter School.
The City of Perris’ Getting Employees to Actively Ride (GEAR) Program began in November of 2018 with a vision to reduce the carbon footprint in the City by promoting active transportation to the City’s employees and ultimately expanding the program to Perris residents.
In February of 2019, the Public Health Staff applied for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to support efforts of this vision and was awarded $122,088 for the installation of bike lanes. Through this project, the City hopes to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions to improve the air quality in Perris, while providing a culture of friendly-biking roads residents. Furthermore, the proposed project will improve infrastructure in the target area and support the revitalization of low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, while aligning with the City’s Trails Master Plan which aims to develop bikeways for both recreational and commuter uses.
The proposed GEAR Class III project consists of the development and installation of 6.6 miles of Class III (bike route) bikeway facilities to provide positive health outcomes and safer bicycle routes for those who reside within the target area. The Class III bikeway consists of a route that is shared by bicyclists and cars. The lane will be marked with signs, sharrow stencils painted in the traffic lane, route signage, directional, distance signage and traffic signals coordinated for cyclists.
